Celebrated on the 31st October, the night before the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day – Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on this festive occasion.  Dressing up in costumes, ranging from ghoulish creatures to superheros knocking on doors with the question “Trick or Treat”.

This implies if the homeowner does not offer up a treat, the child is jokingly threatening to perform a trick or prank on the homeowner.

Did you know that in some parts of the world, besides telling scary stories, carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, Christians on All Hallows Eve, attend church services and light candles on the graves of the deceased?

This is due to the fact that All Hallows is the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.

Ever heard about Trunk or Treating?   Another practice instead of trick or treating, occurs when “children are offered treats from the trunks of cars parked in a church or school parking lot”, or sometimes, a school parking lot.  The car trunk (or boot), is decorated in a particular theme chosen from movies, scripture, children’s literature or peoples occupations. Deemed as safer than door to door knocking, this practice is growing in popularity.

The tradition of Halloween is clearly not an Australian pastime, but over the years it has developed its own Australian following.  Shops are now adorned with vampire and witches costumes, skull masks and devils pitchforks and displays of Halloween candy named ‘gummie fang’s or ‘brain licker’ lolly pops.

So whether you’re a fan or not of this pastime, it looks like Halloween is here to stay, so make sure you have a small stash of treats in your house for those trick or treaters, you wouldn’t want you house egged or front lawn covered in wet toilet paper now would you?
